First-ever locally-sourced pet food for working dogs is made with farmers, for farmers

on April 22, 2021

Putting food on people’s tables isn’t an easy task – that’s the kind of heavy responsibility that farmers carry on their shoulders everyday. They’re always just one disaster away from losing capital or worse, their livelihood.

Severe weather disturbances can wash away months worth of crops, diseases can wipe out herds of animals. They’re always on the verge of going into debt which can spiral into a host of other problems affecting their relationships and sometimes, mental health.

Agriculture is one of the primary industries contributing to New Zealand’s gross domestic product (GDP), a testament to the important role that farmers play in boosting the country’s economy. Unfortunately, the idea that these people working behind the scenes might need support rarely cross the minds of consumers who enjoy the fruits of their labor.

We, Wishbone Pet Food, a family-owned business of premium quality pet food proudly made in New Zealand, recognize this need. That’s why with every pet food we produce, we make sure that it’s made from locally-sourced ingredients straight from the fields of hardworking New Zealand farmers.

Taking care of farmers’ trusted companions

We know that it’s not just farmers who are working hard in the fields everyday. Their trusted companion dogs work just as hard. They are key to successfully managing farms.

Since their main job is guarding and herding cattle, a day in the life of a working farm dog includes running from 60 to 100 kilometers per day at the speed of 20 to 30 kilometers per hour – that’s equivalent to the speed limit of vehicles on local roads in Toronto, Canada!

You can just imagine the amount of energy that these working dogs burn everyday. This means that they can’t be on just any diet. Their nutrient requirements are different from a pet dog who mostly lounges around the house. They need to eat the best working dog food that contains the necessary nutrients, vitamins, and minerals required to carry out such a strenuous task.

Aside from recognizing the plight of farmers, we also understand that their working dogs have very specific needs, too. And providing this need is another way of supporting them. That’s why we came out with Wishbone Gold – pet food formulated especially for working dogs, the first of its kind in New Zealand.

Pet food especially-formulated for working dogs

Wishbone Gold is made from 100% free-range New Zealand Beef and Lamb – just the kind of protein that working dogs need to build and maintain muscle mass. It’s also packed with 8 superfoods – Mango, Papaya, Blueberries, Cranberries, Flaxseed, Rosemary, Basil, and Peppermint – that boost the immune system and promote healthy digestion, making sure that these companion dogs are always fit to work.

Most importantly, it contains taurine which helps protect working dogs’ hearts by allowing it to pump a large amount of blood throughout the dogs’ body. It keeps them from getting tired easily and gives them the energy they need to perform their daily tasks. It’s also enriched with Glucosamine which takes care of the joints, highly crucial for dogs that use their legs to run all day.

“We care about our partner farmers,” said Jerel Kwek, CEO of Wishbone Pet Food. “Through Wishbone Gold, we aim not just to give back to our beloved farmers but also provide proper nutrition to their dogs – their prized companions.”

The first-ever working dog food that gives back to farmers

But it doesn’t stop there. Wishbone Pet Food has partnered with Rural Support Trust, a non-profit organization that provides all kinds of help to rural communities – from how to handle severe weather, financial support to relationship and personal counseling – to further help local farmers.

For every bag of Wishbone Gold sold, we are donating $5 to Rural Support Trust so they can provide more mentorship and resources to farmers who are in need.

“We are incredibly grateful for the support of Wishbone Gold. It is a great partnership - just like a farmer with his dogs. Funds raised from the sale of bags can be utilized across Rural NZ to help make a difference,” said Neil Bateup, Rural Support Trust National Council Chair.
